Dags

On the last day of summer 2021, my beloved best friend and constant companion, Dags, crossed the rainbow bridge, just shy of 15, or 105 in dog years. There’s a big hole in my heart but I’m so beyond grateful she was by my side for almost half my life.

from Dags’ page in “Reasons Why I Love”

-letting me love you

-forgiving me for not keeping any sort of schedule

-loving the people I love the most

-always finding the sunny spot

-eating books up until where I read when you were a pup

-sitting on every couch you see

-endlessly chasing the ball at Ocean Beach

-going for butt scratches at Shotwells

-chasing birds on cliffs in Pacifica

-putting up with my casual walks turned into 12 milers

-eating the pizza crust + knowing when I’m done

-letting me constantly sing “Your Song” to you

-handling the 37 on the 14th Street hill like a pro

-the few moments where you let me see you love me like licking my tears

-loving Dillon Beach as much as me

-coming back after chasing deer with Patton

-riding seamlessly in cars, planes, trains, + buses

-being up for most anything but also,

-standing your ground whether it’s not wanting to cross 17th; refusing to be a bike dog + giving me kid-like scraps to prove it; moving to the other side of the couch; taking the “life bites” out of the Blue Buffalo food + stringing them all over the kitchen; sitting on me until I get up to go outside; harassing the gophers at Point Isabel; or refusing to get into any body of water

-going into every store + dressing room with me

-having patience for the extensive lag time between when I first say “do you want to go outside?” and when we actually go

-teaching me how to love unconditionally

-giving me so much attitude yet so much love
